About the production area
Originating from the eastern part of the Gifu prefecture, Mino Wares are mainly made in the cities of Tajimi, Toki and Mizunami. There, a wide variety of pottery is produced, from traditional dishes to western tableware, as well as delicate handmade tiles. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1600), the production was focused around tea utensils, but shifted towards celadon and various white porcelain made daily items from the Edo period (1603-1868). Notably, the tile production began more recently, at the Taisho period (1912-1926). Throughout time, Mino Wares have always been at the forefront of the pottery industry, representing a production center where new technologies and traditions blended in harmoniously, and techniques were passed from a generation to another.
